David M. Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of the Carlyle Group, to Keynote 2014 Wharton School MBA Graduation

David Rubenstein imagePhiladelphia, PA — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has announced that David M. Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of The Carlyle Group, will be the featured speaker at the School’s MBA graduation in Philadelphia.  The May 18, 2014, ceremony will take place at the Palestra, 33rd and South Streets, Philadelphia, PA.  Mr. Rubenstein co-founded The Carlyle Group in 1987, and it has since grown into a firm managing $189 billion with 34 offices around the world.

“David Rubenstein has been a stellar example of the power of business as a force for good in the world,” said Wharton Dean Thomas S Robertson. “His work in the fields of private equity and philanthropy serve as a wonderful inspiration for our MBA graduates who will themselves be the next leaders of change.”

Throughout his four-decade career, Mr. Rubenstein has dedicated himself to business, public service and philanthropy.  In the early 1970s, Mr. Rubenstein practiced law in New York with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.  From 1975 to 1976, he served as Chief Counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments.  During the Carter Administration, Mr. Rubenstein was Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy.  After his White House service and before co-founding Carlyle, Mr. Rubenstein practiced law in Washington with Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge (now Pillsbury, Winthrop, Shaw Pittman).

Mr. Rubenstein is active with a number of nonprofit educational and cultural organizations.  Among his many volunteer positions, he is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Duke University; Co-Chair of the Board of the Brookings Institution; a Regent of the Smithsonian Institution; and Vice-Chairman of the Board of the Council on Foreign Relations.

A native of Baltimore, Mr. Rubenstein is a 1970 magna cum laude graduate of Duke, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa.  Following Duke, Mr. Rubenstein graduated in 1973 from the University of Chicago Law School.
